What Tortie for iPhone needs

  • An Apple silicon Mac running Tortie for Mac 0.111 or later, awake with Tortie open.
  • Tailscale signed in on that Mac. There is nothing else to install on the phone.
  • An iPhone on iOS 18.1 or later.

Tortie for Mac installs its updates when you quit it.

Setting up

In Tortie on your Mac, open Settings then Phone. The first time, your Mac’s name can take several minutes to reach the internet, and Settings then Phone shows how far it has got.

If you are not the admin of your Tailscale network, the admin may need to approve Funnel for your Mac.

If your phone cannot reach your Mac

Check that your Mac is awake, Tortie is open and Tailscale is signed in.

After Tortie for Mac updates, it may ask you once to allow your phone again. If your phone says Tortie could not reach your Mac, open Settings then Phone on your Mac and press Allow.

Renaming your Mac in Tailscale

While your phone can reach your Mac, anyone can look up your Mac’s Tailscale name. To change it, open the Machines page of Tailscale’s admin console, choose the menu beside your Mac, then Edit machine name (Tailscale’s guide).

After a rename, your phone must pair again. Tap Unpair this iPhone in the phone’s Settings, and press Remove beside that phone in Settings then Phone on your Mac. Then switch Let my phone reach this Mac off and on, and pair as you did the first time.

Cutting off a phone

On your Mac, press Remove beside the phone in Settings then Phone, or switch off Let my phone reach this Mac. Either works at once, without the phone.
